I was really impressed with this book! Maddie struggles with some issues that happen all the time in real life, and the way the author described how she was feeling and going through was really well written! I loved the comparison to the class's writings as well! Would definitely recommend!

Rating: 5/5 The author of this novel did an amazing job creating characters and a plot that truly makes the audience feel the emotions of the characters. The audience is taken on an emotional rollercoaster as they learn that Maddy Malone, a normal freshman girl was raped and her entire life came crashing down. The story details a class writing assignment where each person continues the same story, each person writing a chapter from their own unique perspective. The story written by the class is a fiction novel, however, the main character seems to embody Maddy's emotions. Facing the ridicule of her peers and realizing that her assaulters are in her English class, Maddy is faced with enormous challenges. I recommend this book to any teenager who feels alone in their emotions.

A sad story about a girl named Maddy Malone who all so suddenly gets raped by five masked figures in the middle of spring as she’s walking home. She feels the only way to deal with her pain is to burn cigarettes into her thighs, however that won’t help her too much when grade 10 begins and she quickly learns two people involved with the incident are in her English class. Every page you turn, you learn more and more about the pain and struggle Maddy is dealing with which connects to the book her English class is working together to write, which happens to be called The Pain Eater. Maddy learns the only people that know about what happened are the people that were there, this quickly changes when rumours begin to spread about the cause. As Maddy feels she needs to keep the incident to herself and continue to harm herself, she begins to open up and learn how serious this issue is and that there are many people around her who will stand next to her and support her every step of the way. A heartbreaking story I would strongly recommend. 3/5
