“I ate too much; I think I’m going to be sick,” Tom says. Every time, Tom eats too much and says he’s going to be sick as they’re walking back to the car, single file. Tom never gets sick, at least never after dim sum on Communion Sundays. [Note: The potential to learn from their personal childhood experiences gets completely overrun by Tom’s incessant post-dim sum lament, his gastro-version of _The Boy Who Cried Wolf_. And thus, when they have their own children, Tom and his sisters will find out the messy way that, unlike Tom after eating too much dim sum, their children, like the vast majority of kids who say they’re going to be sick, are uncannily prophetic.]

She’s seen his family photo albums. Everything is outdoors. Hiking, canoeing, diving off a floating dock. A photo of everyone standing around a firepit in winter, holding wooden snowshoes. Rows of white teeth and Kool-Aid smiles. Everyone wears red plaid, even the dog.

An asthmatic, and the only one in the family, when Tom is an old man and Mumma even older, she will draw a straight line between Tom’s inhaler and Dad, the smoker, picking up Tom and carrying him everywhere when he was a baby, which Dad did not do with the girls.

I warmed up to the second two thirds of this collection a lot more than the first, so I'm glad I kept going.
