The first invasion of Earth was beaten back by a coalition of corporate and international military forces, and the Chinese army, but China has been devastated by the Formics' initial efforts to eradicate Earth life forms and prepare the ground for their own settlement. The Scouring of China struck fear into the other nations of the planet; that fear blossomed into drastic action when scientists determined that the single ship that wreaked such damage was merely a scout ship. Earth's government has been reorganized for defense; it now comprises a Hegemon, a planetary official responsible for keeping all the formerly warring nations in line, and a Polemarch, responsible for organizing all the military forces of the planet into the new International Fleet. A lot of people don't like Orson Scott Card because he's vocal in his anti-homosexual beliefs. I'm not going to comment about that because he's entitled to them no matter what myself or anyone else thinks. One thing is for sure, though. He doesn't preach these beliefs in his books. He tells the advertised story, which some people don't do, instead interjecting their political beliefs into their books.

Every novel should have a satisfactory ending. This book had no ending. The basic story was okay, but without any conclusion? That makes for a complete waste of time. I'm sure the next book in the series (?) will end the same way. It's a shameless come-on for the next volume.

Does an excellent job of showing how the elements of the society and the training regime that are in place in Ender's Game, came to be. The only minor downside to it for me is some small inconsistencies, which mostly to me come off as either being made due to a rethinking of how those things would work, or being made to make for a better story, possibly both.

Wish I had waited for the other two to come out before reading. Read through this fast.

Excellent read, though a bit dark (and perhaps too realistic) in showing humanities propensity in putting personal gain over the betterment of all. Very much looking forward to the release of the next two.
