Retired from his fighting days, John Perry is now village ombudsman for a human colony on distant Huckleberry. With his wife, former Special Forces warrior Jane Sagan, he farms several acres, adjudicates local disputes, and enjoys watching his adopted daughter grow up.

That is, until his and Jane's past reaches out to bring them back into the game--as leaders of a new human colony, to be peopled by settlers from all the major human worlds, for a deep political purpose that will put Perry and Sagan back in the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war.

Sadly this is the last of the Old Man series and I felt the best because it made the entire conflict more understandable and the characters were once again human rather than machine-at least partly so. It shows that a sentient race will always carry the bad characteristics with it as it expands, to be human/alien is to kill perceived enemies and expansion into space will only increase the numbers of potential enemies.

While this book focuses more on politics rather than war, it is still an interesting read. There is a moderate use of "Deus Ex Machina," which allows the climax of the book to result in a desirable outcome for the good guys, the combination of politics, humor, and character development still make this book a worthwhile conclusion of the first arc of the Old Man's War series.

Great book with some great plot twists. A solid follow up to the two previous books.

John Perry and Jane Sagan are no longer part of the Colonial forces. Retired, they are community leaders on the colony world of Huckleberry. Their life is good, with their adopted daughter and some hobby farming on the side. But then duty comes calling and both Perry and Sagan are needed to help found the new colony of Roanoke. This colony will be different in that it will be made up colonists from existing colonies, rather than drawn directly from Earth. But both former soldiers find out that the colony name was deliberately chosen as the Colonial government as they have not so nice plans for their newest colony. Can Perry and Sagan find a solution to the political machinations and save the colony ?

This third installment of the Old Man's War series continues the story of the two fan favourites. Quick moving and engaging, it's a good read. The only thing I wish would be that we get more of what was happening to Zoe when she was off world and that Scalzi spent more time on the intelligent species that already inhabited Roanoke. Although Scalzi does address the first issue in a later volume, the absence is still felt.

Good read.

Scalzi continues the story started in Old Man's War Good, solid science fiction at it's best.
