In 1801 newly elected president Thomas Jefferson, taking office in the burgeoning capital of Washington, D.C., convinces Ethan Gage and Norwegian Magnus Bloodhammer to go on a scouting expedition--one that precedes that of Lewis and Clark--to investigate reports of woolly mammoths and blue-eyed Indians. The pair have their own motive, however, which they neglect to share with the president: a search for the mythical hammer of the Norse god Thor.

The Dakota Cipher --- by William Dietrich. Dietrich is one of the best authors writing adventure novels with suspense and action set in the past. One place in time he favours is the start of the nineteenth century. That affords him the opportunity to introduce Napoleon into some of novels. In the Dakota Cipher we are introduced to Thomas Jefferson and a Washington that contains more than a handful of inhabitants. Dietrich bases his novels loosely on historic al fact and so he does here. Pierre Radisson who will become famous in his own rite plays a pivotal role; Lewis and Clark, not yet even introduced to one another briefly, before they undertake their voyage of exploration across the North American continent also grace the novel. Ethan Gage, perennial hero of the Dietrich novels charged b y the president of a young republic to reconnoiter the French lands west of the Mississippi. In his travels across the continent, Gage encounters fierce Indians; treacherous English; coureur du bois; and as usual there is, as always, a love, or perhaps lust interest. Another one of Dietrich’s novels that can’t be put down.
