When Morning Comes was different and difficult, to comprehend and to warm up to. I couldn’t bring myself to finish it due to lack of interest, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t have its good points. The story covers four teenagers in South Africa, all very different from each other but entwined in some way. There is Zanele, who acts against the government secretly and also covers for her sister Mankwe, a regular performer at the shebeen. Thabo, a street gangster who loves Zanele and has an expensive taste in clothes. Meena, working with her father at an all purpose shop and collecting propaganda pamphlets within her maths book; but even then she is safer, being Indian. Jack, a white boy who is the most privileged and the most curious, two factors that cannot possibly work out in his favour. I enjoyed the first half of this book, but the constant use of Afrikaans words were hard to comprehend and I had to keep flipping back to the glossary. Simply stressful, tiring yet intelligent in ways. I will make an effort to reread it, in attempts to appreciate it more! Rating 2.5/5

Four South African teenagers with different origins, Zanele, Thabo, Meena and Jack, narrate the story of how Black students took to the street in 1976 to fight against racist laws. If you are like me, you will become attached to them - they are not necessarily likeable, and they have various motives for being involved with the uprising (during which the police eventually started shooting at children - let it be noted), but they are complex and interesting characters.
