A Generation of Sociopaths

How the Baby Boomers Betrayed America

In his "remarkable" (Men's Journal) and "controversial" (Fortune) book -- written in a "wry, amusing style" (The Guardian) -- Bruce Cannon Gibney shows how America was hijacked by the Boomers, a generation whose reckless self-indulgence degraded the foundations of American prosperity.

In A Generation of Sociopaths, Gibney examines the disastrous policies of the most powerful generation in modern history, showing how the Boomers ruthlessly enriched themselves at the expense of future generations.

Acting without empathy, prudence, or respect for facts--acting, in other words, as sociopaths--the Boomers turned American dynamism into stagnation, inequality, and bipartisan fiasco. The Boomers have set a time bomb for the 2030s, when damage to Social Security, public finances, and the environment will become catastrophic and possibly irreversible--and when, not coincidentally, Boomers will be dying off.

Gibney argues that younger generations have a fleeting window to hold the Boomers accountable and begin restoring America.

This took me forever to read but I loved it regardless. If even a fraction of this boomer entitlement is real I am shocked. Gibney is funny, concise, highly entertaining and pretty fair even though he is calling boomers sociopaths throughout. This book is pretty dense though so I would recommend taking it slow or listening to it.

I'm suspicious of the single underlying reason presented in this book. However, I think this was an AMAZING and new perspective to consider. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as I found it well-written and well-sourced.

Globalism and corrupt politicians are where the real blame should be placed for the problems now facing North America and Western civilization as a whole.

Gibney sacrifices coherent analysis in an attempt to be controversial. Some interesting evidence of the slow descent of American society is provided but his attribution of blame for everything currently wrong with America solely to an undifferentiated, homogeneous "Boomer generation" without recognition of the many other factors behind the decline or even the differences within the generation leads to a less than useful analysis.
