Spoiler alert. The jacket to the DVD has Noah, Alison, Helen, and Cole. It should really have only Noah this time around. So much of season three is about him and his demons. Demons born out of his prison experience as well as his younger days at home. He has become a rather difficult person and I'm sorry to say, not the type of character I want to see on screen. He is working as a professor in New Jersey. He meets another professor (Juliette played by Irene Jacob). You know where this is headed. I was glad that she came into his life. Perhaps he could find solace in her arms. However, she seems to want to feed upon his dark side. He resists at first including refusing to tie her up. I thought that was the end of it, but then we find them together in Paris having an affair (Huh?). She is married to a brilliant man who is suffering from Alzheimer's. One day he seems to have a miraculous recovery, but she still rushes to be with Noah. What is it about this guy that women are so drawn to him like moths to a flame? I don't get it. Even more so than season two, the writing is starting to fall apart. Even if we can believe that all that has happened is possible, do we care when the characters are so unlikable? I'm still pulling for Helen and Alison. I'll watch season four to see what's become of them.

It is mentioned in the special features that in this season Sarah Treem, the showrunner for The Affair, was aiming at creating the story of these characters shadow selves, their darker sides inspired by such writers such as Dostoevsky and Jung. This show is fantastic at depicting the way we view ourselves and our experiences versus how others around us view us and those same experiences. It's an aspect of life that is a fundamental truth and yet easy to forget that peoples perspectives of the same person or event vary so greatly. Those involved in creating The Affair do a truly brilliant job illuminating human nature and the acting all around is superb.
