Magnus 'Steps' Craig is part of the elite three-man Special Tracking Unit of the FBI. Called in on special cases where his skills are particularly needed, he works as a tracker. The media dubs him 'The Human Bloodhound,' since Steps is renowned for his incredible ability to find and follow trails over any surface better than anyone else. But there's a secret to his success. Steps has a special ability--a kind of synesthesia--where he can see the 'essence' of a person, something he calls 'shine,' on everything they've touched ... When the remains of a murdered woman are found, Steps recognizes the shine left by the murderer from another crime scene with a physically similar victim. And he uncovers the signature at both scenes---the mark of a sad face.

First of the "Steps" or "Shine Tracker" series. The special tracking team is using superhuman powers, and have to keep it a secret from everyone--even their team members. Steps can see a special aura that allows him to track people even years after they have walked across a lasting surface or leaned against a wall. But keeping that ability from other law enforcement types, his team, and the press is getting harder as he manages time after time to "notice things others cannot."
Despite the special power, these books are not in the silly or "woo-woo" category. Most of the work Steps does has to be verified by real police work, and the relationships in the book are believable and make you want to read more. Around 5 hours reading time.

What a great book! Fascinating premise. While reading Collecting the Dead I found myself feeling sad and depressed at times, and then the author would throw in something that made me chuckle. I loved the perfect fit of Steps and Jimmy, as they track together. If you like David Baldacci's Amos Decker series, you will love this series as well!! Can't wait to read the next one!

Absolutely fantastic book from a first time author!! Could not put it down nor wait to find out how the plot turns would work out! As others have mentioned, am really looking forward to book #2 and others in the series.

Fantastic book, really enjoyed the author's writing style. Lots of suspense, and some dry wit. Looking forward to his next one.

Coping with and using an unwanted ability makes a very interesting twist in this debut suspense novel. Can't wait for book #2.

Steps is an FBI tracker who has a special ability to detect and identify the residual "shine" left by individuals wherever they've been. Shine is unique for each person. This skill gives Steps and his team an unbeatable edge when it comes to solving crimes in general and catching serial killers in particular. This book was a good read although not as suspenseful as I prefer. I enjoy it when when someone has a seemingly supernatural advantage with which to fight bad guys/evil, The trade off is an uneven playing field where there's not much wondering about who will win or how. Collecting the Dead was an enjoyable read with a protagonist who is interesting for reasons beyond his unique talents. I look forward to the next Steps novel.
