"Radio Free Europe" gave [R.E. M.] a lowly Billboard No.78 placing. That, however, was the re-recorded Murmur version. This landmark song was first released, in an initial pressing of one thousand, on the independent label Hib-Tone. "I purposely did not want any lyrics understood..." Stipe revealed. "I hadn't written any of the words yet, so I just kind of blabbered." Nonetheless, the Hib-Tone release registered with the underground press--"One of the few great American punk singles." enthused Village Voice.

R.E.M. were unhappy with the mix and the mastering, but this version zipped along with an urgency that may prefer over the more famous recording.
