The reason I read this book was becuase I had recently read a short story called the lottery in language arts. I thought the short story was really good and I thought the book would be based off of it. And it absolutely was. "The Lottery" is an amazing book about a group of kids called, Shadow Council or SC. Every year their school hosts a lottery and whoever the lottery "winner" is gets shunned from every student because the students are afraid of the power SC has. This girl, Sally, is chosen as the lottery winner, but she is no ordinary lottery winner. She doesn't believe in the tradition, but after all her friends leave her she begins to doubt her faith in herself and starts falling into SC's trap. I don't want to spoil the book so I won't go on, but it was a really good book! It shows readers how important it is to stay true to themselves, and not to change just becuase you're afraid of someone.

I picked this book up because I thought it had an interesting premise. It's a very unique story (in my opinion), and althought Sally has her inner demons, they are delivered in ways that do not make her overally whiny/dramatic/angsty. Her relationship, especially between her brother and the Shadow Council's president, are realistic and compelling. It touches on issues that many teens face, such as isolation, bullying etc.

And the best part is, the author's Canadian!

I loved this book! I just picked it up at the library thinking it might be interesting and I absolutely loved it! I found it to be a moving book about a girl who has to go through so much but as hard as things get she always stands by what she believes. It was a truly inspiring read and I would recommend it to anyone even if this isn't your typical genre because I don't read much of this genre but I loved it. I gave a 5 out of 5.
