Get swept up in a timeless story of lost dreams and redemption, in which former high school sweethearts get a second chance at first love--from the #1 New York Times bestselling author, Nicholas Sparks.

"Everyone wanted to believe that endless love was possible. She'd believed in it once, too, back when she was eighteen."

In the spring of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths.

Now, twenty-five years later, Amanda and Dawson are summoned back to Oriental for the funeral of Tuck Hostetler, the mentor who once gave shelter to their high school romance. Neither has lived the life they imagined . . . and neither can forget the passionate first love that forever changed their lives. As Amanda and Dawson carry out the instructions Tuck left behind for them, they realize that everything they thought they knew -- about Tuck, about themselves, and about the dreams they held dear -- was not as it seemed. Forced to confront painful memories, the two former lovers will discover undeniable truths about the choices they have made. And in the course of a single, searing weekend, they will ask of the living, and the dead: Can love truly rewrite the past?

(sad but beautiful) although I expected a lil more out of Sparks

I got totally wrapped up in this book and the characters. Although the ending was predictable I still couldn't put it down.

This book was recommended to me because it pissed my friend off. I see why it pissed her off. It pissed me off too but the truth is that the ways the events unfolded in this book reminds me that's how things are. People will hold grudges, they will judge you endlessly, and you just have to do the best you can.

The wonderment of this book stretches your imagination at times, but sometimes the world works with a bit of magic, too much to be a coincidence. Not only that, but the manner in which relationships work as well are a bit of a stretch. I've read Sparks before and I can say this isn't his best work and was rather weak in comparison to rile my emotions and attachments to the characters in some of his other books. This book was just a snack to my brain that leaves your craving for a real meal.

If you are a fan of Lifetime Movie Network, then you will enjoy THE BEST OF ME, a light escapist read perfect for a day at the pool or weekend trip. That being said, for me the story was simplistic, saccharine, and cliched. If THE BEST OF ME represents "the best of Nicholas Sparks", it will be a long time before I pick up another book by this author again.

The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks is very much similar to other of Spark’s bestselling romances, such as The Notebook. This novel revolves around the young and old lives of Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole, the typical rich girl and poor boy plot. After Dawson leaves Amanda in hopes to make her life better (despite the fact that he still loves her endlessly), she continues to live her life with a man she doesn’t truly love. I really liked how they showed flashbacks to their teenage romance while they were in their forties. This novel includes moments of suspense, romance and tragedy. In my opinion, this story was just like any other romance novel but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. The basic summary of the movie is: two teenagers fall in love, one family doesn’t accept the relationship, the love is torn apart and other common complications until the couple reunites and rekindles their passion. The story relies on the fact that your first love is powerful and can often last a lifetime. Although the plot wasn’t very original, it always ends in a sappy emotion tugging ending. At times, I felt it was going too slow for my liking. There were many morals throughout the novel, one being that ‘love is not lost’. I liked how Nicholas Sparks developed the characters so rich that I can make connections to them throughout. I would recommend an age of 12 to read this novel because it had little/no inappropriate content. Overall, The Best of Me was a light, “feel good” novel to curl up and read, but slightly predictable.

Super easy read in typical Nicholas Sparks fashion. I wasn't as drawn in by either of the main characters and the twist towards the end was not really all that surprising. Definitely not the "best" of Sparks by any means.

to BookwormLisa.....this book's ending was a mixture of happy/sad, if you can believe! Actually the book was a nice love story, but I thought the ending ruined it because it was just too, too, too impossibly coincidental to the point of completely unbelievable. Would be interested in others' feelings about this ending.

[Queue that Justin Timberlake song. These people and mirrors.]

"...seeing Dawson's face next to hers in the bathroom mirror felt distinctly intimate. It had been a long time since anyone had made her feel attractive, but she felt that way now. She knew that she was drawn to Dawson. She reveled in the way his gaze traveled over her, and the graceful ease of his body; she was acutely aware of their almost primal understanding of each other. Though it had been only a matter of days, she trusted him instinctively and knew she could tell him anything. Yes, they'd argued on that first night over dinner and again about the Bonners, but there'd also been an unvarnished honesty in what they'd said. Amanda continued to study Dawson in the mirror. He turned and caught her gaze in the reflection. Without looking away, he gently reached out to smooth back a stray lock of hair that had fallen across her eyes. And then he was gone..."-excerpt from "The Best of Me"
