The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 only prologue. The rise, fall, and rescue of Wall Street in the bubble-and-bailout era was the coming-out party for the network of looters who sit at the nexus of American political and economic power. The grifter class--made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding--has been growing in power for a generation, transferring wealth upward through increasingly complex financial mechanisms and political maneuvers. The crisis was only one terrifying manifestation of how they've hijacked America's political and economic life. Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi here unravels the story, digging beyond the headlines to get into the deeper roots and wider implications. He traces the movement's origins to Ayn Rand and her most influential acolyte, Alan Greenspan; he uncovers the hidden commodities bubble that transferred billions of dollars to Wall Street while creating food shortages around the world; and he shows how finance dominates politics with an inside account of the high-stakes battle for health-care reform--a battle the true reformers lost.--From publisher description.

This is an excellent and lucid look at the biggest financial rip off in US history- amazingly, no one involved in the fraud has been prosecuted.

Taibbi manages to take something considered boring and complicated and boils it down to interesting and understandable bits of information. He shows just how deep the control Wall Street has over our elected officials goes. Eye-opening and depressing

A masterpiece by Matt Taibbi; investigative journalism at its very best. This is for concerned citizens struggling through all the Economics verbiage and purposeful-complexity; this is THE book to start with.

Griftopia plows through all the pseudo-"scholarly" barriers and exposes those at the top of the Financial scam who gorge themselves while we plow on in confusion.

You'll finally grasp the rigging behind the Tech and Housing bubbles. The systemic fraud lobbied by the big banksters. Oil prices rising because of the Commodities market scam. The Obamacare giveaway to Insurance and Big Pharma. And the pathology of big banks. Please connect the dots and understand how this affects our entire quality-of-life! (job-security/healthcare/pension/environment/education/housing/security)

This book exposes the Financial Crisis like no other! Also recommended is Taibbi's follow-up: "The Divide"

...For a book on solutions: "The Democracy Project" by David Graeber

Matt Taibbi is proving to be one of the best investigative journalists of our time - and a good writer, if somewhat prone to 'shock words'. This book may not sound academic, but the research depth and breadth is evident, and his descriptions of how the financial upper class is stealing from ordinary Americans (and the rest of the world) may leave you enraged and frustrated at times.

Highly recommended!

Taibbi adds his concise and intelligent addition to the honest voices out there (Nomi Prins, Les Leopold, Chris Hedges, Michael Parenti and Christian Parenti, Ellen Schultz [Retirement Heist], Linda McQuaig [Billionaires' Ball], Pam Martens and others. Together, with his later articles and blog posts detailing the just how everything is financially rigged - - and really, he is still just scratching the surface here - - regarding LIBOR rates, interest rate swap rates, oil price rigging, gold and silver rigging, plus as yet to be mentioned: internalization (where the top banksters and hedge funds buy retail stock trades and match them up internally on their own systems, allow rigged trades upon trades upon trades, etc.).

If, instead of doing a rant, Rick Mercer wrote a book, Griftopia would fit the bill. Here, exposed in broad daylight, are the looters who do the bidding of the banksters, politicos and their sycophant public sector bureaucrats, to shakedown, fleece and rip off a clueless, attention deficit disorder afflicted public; self-entitled cabals with snouts in every trough extant. As noted by an astute observer of the scene, we have 'cartels, rentier arrangements, fiefdoms and legioins of toadies, lackeys, apparatchiks and embezzlers' sponging off the peasants and muppets that constitute the populace at large.
Trust no one my friend, no one.

Terrific investigative reporting.
Matt writes for Rolling Stone and is a leading reporter on Wall Street
vulture capitalism.
I especially like his chapters on Alan Greenspan, "The Biggest Asshole in the Universe" and the last chapter on Goldman Sachs, which outlines 30 years of corrupt and criminal business/political practices.
