Now adults, Taina, Holly, Adrian, and Raymond have been summoned by the fifth, David, to an island off the coast of Connecticut and the family home of David's ex-girlfriend, Julia. But along with the joy of reuniting comes the exposure of raw places, jealousy, and childhood sorrows. This book has a lot in it: family past, family present, family future, choice of family, togetherness, choice of one's destiny. The premise of the story also is intriguing: 5 children found in a boat; they have no history, no roots.
However, this story, despite all these good elements, doesn't hold together well except in a trite, fairy-tale way of "happy endings". The characters are flat and one can't get behind them in any real fashion. The conversation is mundane and doesn't pull the reader in. The story doesn't hold many surprises either; hints abound before the revelation is made.
Sad to say but this interesting premise didn't pan out into an interesting story.
