The book was okay – but not one of my favorites.

Fascinating book about Russia during Stalin's reign and the distrust felt amongst the people. Worth reading and hard to put down.
If you liked it then Check out the movie: Moscow doesn't believe in Tears.

While not a happy read by any means, the beauty of this novel captivated me and moved me and I found the experience of reading definitely worth the heartache. The ballet portions are written knowledgably and artistically, and her portrayal of Soviet Russia is fascinating.

Russian by birth Grigori has carried to adulthood beliefs about his birth parents that have made even his career choice inevitable. Now, a widower, he is at a crossroads. Drew, with her own seeming failed past, works for an auction house that has just acquired the jewelry collection of a once famous Russian ballerina who defected to the West in the 1950s. Kalotay takes us into the lives of three people looking for answers. What they find will surprise them?and even more, those of us along for the reading.

Who wouldn?t like a book with lovely jewelry, ballet, intrigue and secrets? Plus, it?s a love story?several people?s love stories. Beautiful.

Despite the cover description being all about the jewels being auctioned, this is actually a sombre story about communist Russia, Spoiler alert: I was left with a lingering sadness after the book was finished because of the unhappy fate met by Victor. This is not a feel good novel and I do not recommend it if you need a pick-me-up. However, it is a good read if you are emotionally ready to feel troubled by a strong story.

A jewel of a novel. Each chapter is named after an auction lot of jewellery being sold by a former ballerina, once a star of the Bolshoi Ballet. She is selling her gem collection to rid herself of the past, but instead stirs it up."
A Chatelaine top pick.
