Fun Movie.! O the 60's what Great Cars.!

Vincent T Lombardo Feb 27, 2016

The 1963 film, starring Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh, is a bit dated, a bit silly, but, overall, cute and entertaining. It has a great cast. However, the 1995 TV movie adaptation, starring Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams, is much better! The TV movie is more faithful to the play and retains all of the music. (For some inexplicable reason, the 1963 film omitted some of the best songs.) The 1963 film also focussed more attention on the characters Kim and Hugo because they were played by Ann-Margret and Bobby Rydell. The 1995 TV movie, like the play, focusses more on the characters Albert and Rosie.

I'm not sure if this is a classic, because of the inventiveness of it all, or unregarded, since few today have actually seen it. Contains a number of songs you'll recognize. Has some very funny bits, but is definitely odd in places. Terrific production values in a number of the dance routines, with a really cheap set in places. Should be seen by any student of cinema or theatre, but probably won't be universally popular.

In the old day, there was no music auto-arranging equipment, it must be a bit of inventive to orchestrate around the lousy melodies.

Released in 1963 - Bye Bye Birdie's rather silly, but good-natured story was inspired by the sensation caused when Elvis Presley was drafted into the US Army in 1957._____ Elvis Presley, himself, was the first choice for the part of Birdie, but his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, rejected the idea as he didn't want Presley to appear in any roles that were parodies of himself._____ Before the swaggering pop idol, Conrad Birdie is officially drafted into the service he is scheduled by his publicity agent to appear in a final, farewell performance on the ever-popular Ed Sullivan Show. At this gala event he will sing "One Last Kiss" and, then, bestow upon the one, lucky girl (chosen at random), a "symbolic" good-bye kiss at the finale._____ Bye Bye Birdie featured a good cast which included Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Ann-Margret, and Bobby Rydell.

None-too-successful songwriter Albert Peterson hatches a plot with his secretary - and long-suffering girlfriend - to get rock-and-roll phenomenon Conrad Birdie to sing one of his songs on the Ed Sullivan show. The pop star would then symbolically kiss goodbye to a young lady chosen at random from the country's womanhood, this being his last appearance before being drafted. Complicated to start with, things get more tricky as everyone including Albert's clinging mother descend on the small town where the chosen girl lives. Even Albert's chemical inventions come in useful.
