This is is awful !
I got this NYPL disc home and put this movie in the DVD player...and the screen says: "NOT FORMATTED FOR THIS REGION" !!??
( Even though it states "Region #1" (ie. North America), on the DVD jacket !!?)

I have watched a thousand other New York Public Library DVDs on my Panasonic Region 1 DVD Player,.. but this one makes it over 32 TIMES that a film has come up as "NOT FORMATTED..." etc. !

I waited a long time to get this highly recommended film.
...VERY DISAPPOINTING !!
I really wanted to see this movie.
And I know that ALL the NYPL copies of this title will have this same problem !!
WHY is the New York Public Library still buying DVD's that are "NOT FORMATTED.." to be viewed in this region ! ??

Has this ever happened to anyone else out there ?

THE "DUKE" JOHN WAYNE DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS MOVIE.HE WAS A NATURAL FOR SGT STRYKER. MOVIE WAS FILMED ON THE BEACHES OF CAMP PENDLETON, CALIF WITH REAL MARINES. BE SURE AND WATCH SPECIAL FEATURES IN THE MAKING OF "SANDS OF IWO JIMA , 28 MEDALS OF HONOR AWARDED FOR THIS BATTLE. SO GLAD OUR OLATHE KS LIBRARY STILL HAS 2 COPIES. ANOTHER IWO JIMA FILM TO WATCH IS THE HISTORY CHANNEL'S "FIGHT TO THE DEATH " EXCELLENT.

Director Allan Dwan perfectly captures the intensity of the struggle of the U.S. Marines to capture the Island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese military forces. "The Sands of Iwo Jima" was nominated for 4 Academy Awards. Best Actor for John Wayne, who really turns it on as a Marine. The Academy also was right on for nominations in Writing, Sound, and Editing. Actual battle film from the Marines attack of the Iwo Jima is mixed with footage taken later on the island itself. Though the film is over 65 years old, it is in color and has the raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima as part of the film. It is a glorious film that shows the dedication of the U.S. Marine troops.

This is a 1949 war film starring John Wayne that follows a group of United States Marines from training
to the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.
The DVD includes a 18-minute documentary about "The Making of 'Sands of Iwo Jima'."
It reveals that the Marine Corps supported the filming with great enthusiasm and reason because
the US government wanted to disband the Marine Corps after World War II.
So the brass of the Marines wanted to make it as a propaganda so that the film would create a great impression
on the general public and the US government would retain the Marine Corps.
In fact, the film became a great success and the Marine Corps remains to this day.
The kids and the young who saw this movie at the time would later take part in the Vietnum War with patriotism.
During and after the Vietnum war, however, the general public realize the true nature of the war, which is
quite different from the glorious victory of the Iwo Jima battle.
