With Westerns coming along so seldom these days, it hardly seems fair to bring up a sometimes clumsy screenplay or a bit of sentimentality around the edges. The setting, photography and score work beautifully, and Costner on screen is like having an old buddy hangin' out with you.

As for Duvall, here is an actor. His character elevates "Open Range" from a good cowboy story into the archetypal region where the best Westerns exist.

Thoroughly enjoyable and involving, Kevin Costner's Open Range is a beautifully made western about flawed heroes who believe in redemption, loyalty and respect.

Really good modern Western from Kevin Costner- I'd rank this higher than ' Dances With Wolves ' anyway.

I agree 100% with kitkat5447 the worst western movie I have seen and I have seen a lot! all that shooting was totaly nuts with these large bunch of people watching? like it was entertainment? crazy! the whole thing was so far from reality its impossible to think this is the kind off thing this actually took place.

Simply an awesome movie. I have watched it two times already...and will probably watch it again some time. I highly recommend that you listen to the AUDIO COMMENTARY by Kevin Costner. Outstanding! It will take another two hours to do that, but you will definitely appreciate what he has to say.

I've sometimes wondered what is the maximum number of westerns with the same basic theme are possible in the literary/film industry. This one proved to me there's still a potential for another one.

The last great Western!

I was very surprised by the audio this western delivered. From the opening Thunderstorm, which sounds very cool, to the loud blazing shootouts. This movie is perfect for your HOMETHEATER!!!! The people who design the sound did an excellent job. So it's "SOUND FREAK APPROVED" with DTS 5.1!!! This one scene, where the main characters are in town after they found out what happend to their friend is excellent!! The sound of the pouring rain is so good that my friend looked over at my window to see if it was raining. The shootout at the end is amazing and loud. You may want to turn down your volume when the rifles, shotguns, and sixshooters start firing. I have to give this western 5 stars!!! For outstanding sound, good acting, and a very good story. Pizza with pepperoni and coke.
