I came to this movie searching for all movie titles with HDS as an actor after his recent death. It is as advertised and as most of the comments here have already posted. It's based on a true story, is filmed along the very same route that Alvin Straight took, and everything about it shows that this was a work of love by all involved. I've always enjoyed Richard Farnsworth as an actor and in this, his final film, he shines. All of the characters are well portrayed. Sissy Spacek is simply excellent as his daughter Rose and she portrays her speech-disability with humanity and insight.

Lynch's filming lovingly captures the upper midwest farmland at harvest time and he populates the film with supporting characters who seem as natural to their parts as they are to the land around them. I have to say that during the opening scenes Badalamenti's overture sounded very very Twin-Peakish and I was worried that would carry throughout the film, but I was pleasantly surprised when it didn't and his soundtrack provided yet another layer of atmosphere about Alvin's journey and the lands around it.

As for HDS, as Alvin's brother Lyle, well, he basically is a cameo (an all-important one, though) at the end of the movie and has only a few lines but still manages to pull together the entire film in just that one scene.

Along with most of the other reviewers I simply cannot recommend this movie enough. It's a quiet (but not languid) meditation about family, aging, and living a life in a determined way for as long as you can.

So, David Lynch made a kid-friendly (sort of) Hallmark movie about a man who is determined to stare down his own mortality. As the title implies, the plot is straightforward, unlike most of the director's work. I was kind of shocked that Disney distributed this internationally-produced artsy effort, as the company doesn't seem to have much time for the rugged realism The Straight Story has to offer. Great cinematography and a great score by Angelo Badalamenti, and all the bleak beauty that this Lynch fan has come to expect.

This is one of my all time favs. David Lynch's direction is incredible. The acting performances are all stellar, especially Sissy Spacek and Richard Farnsworth. The cinematography and score are outstanding. The message is as relevant today as it was in 1999, when this movie was released. An amazing true story that was done justice by the film's cast and crew. Everyone should see this movie.

I have watched all of David Lynch's films many times and this is definitely his most heart warming. It does have elements of the uncanny and surrealist humor as well but these are much more subtle than in his other films. The photography in this film is beautiful and you can really see Lynch's painterly and poetic instincts expressed in long slow shots of Midwestern wheat fields and starry skies. The acting and writing are also excellent. This is one of my favorite all time films.

I really enjoyed this movie. I didn't think I would like it as much as I did. It's wonderful to see how this man imparted kindness and much needed wisdom to everyone he meets on his journey to find his brother. Sissy Spacek did a wonderful job playing a character who had suffered great loss in her life that led to a disability. I was glad they allowed the viewer a glimpse into her past to understand her current situation. Great acting from both Farnsworth and Spacek.

A feel good type movie. I thought it had some really funny moments in it. If you want a good family movie to watch then try this one.

An ironic title given that the film is directed by one of the weirdest directors Hollywood has ever seen ( it's also the name of the titular character ). Although this is seen by many as Lynch's most straightforward film, it actually is very strange AND heartfelt at the same time.

This is simply an amazing movie, based on a true story. Don't expect a lot of action, but the acting and depth of human relationships and drama are very moving. One of my favorite movies, it showed me that David Lynch is really a talented filmmaker -taking a strange story line and weaving a complex and engaging story.
