Fifteen year old Jem has been seeing numbers all her life, only understanding what they meant when her mother died from drug overdose. The numbers she sees upon looking into people's eyes are their date of death. Written off as an outcast and "problem student" Jem and her newfound friend Spider end up taking off in a stolen car with the hopes of starting somewhere new.
Jem can see when people are going to die. It started with her mother, even as a young child Jem could see numbers when she looked at people but only on the day her mother overdosed did she realize that the number was the date that person was to die. Now caught in the system, at a school that doesn't care Jem tries to stay away from people. She avoids looking at or talking to anyone else and at all costs she doesn't want to get attached. She knows that she can't have friends or relationships while knowing how long those people have left on this earth.
That is until Jem accidentally befriends a guy from her class, Spider. Skipping school one day, Jem and Spider head to the London Eye. While looking at the tourists waiting in line for the ride, Jem begins to realize something horrible is going to happen. All of the tourists have the same number and the date is today. Grabbing Spider, Jem runs from the Eye and makes it a few blocks before one of the pods explodes. Witnesses remember Spider and Jem at the scene and now they are wanted criminals on the run. To top it all off, Spiders date is just a few days away. Can Jem escape the police and save her friend's life in time?
