A masterpiece of mood and suspense in which a young wife’s fear of impending madness is highlighted by claustrophobic interiors (her opulent quarters are stuffed to the rafters with a dead woman’s memorabilia) and exterior shots of lamplit fog. With her signature sense of grace, Bergman’s Oscar-winning performance traces Paula’s descent from a fresh-faced ingenue ready for life and romance to an emotionally battered hausfrau afraid of every shadow while Boyer (a weak leading man at best) throws everything he’s got into the intense character of Gregory. Joseph Cotten’s turn as a Scotland Yard inspector tends to fade into the background but an impossibly young Angela Lansbury (just seventeen!!) makes her remarkable screen debut as Nancy, the shiftless maid with loose lips and looser morals. An instant classic!

Even it was made over 70 years ago, it is still of the best. It is as good as Alfred Hitchcock’s. Ingrid Bergman‘s performance also is her best. Got to watch yourself if you have not done yet.

This movie really surprised me with its slow build up, gripping suspense, amazing atmosphere and some great acting. Reminds of Hichcock in many ways and does a matching job in creating edge of the seat segments. Ingrid Bergman has put in another great act. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable melodrama.

Of all of the movies these days with millions of dollars spent on special effects, Gaslight has been the only movie I have ever experienced "edge of my seat" suspense. It goes to show it isn't necessary to spend a ton of money to produce an excellent film.

This is a great suspense movie. Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer are at their finest. It's a classic movie you won't want to miss! 5 stars!

Director George Cukor does it again!! He has made a masterpiece with the film "Gaslight". He takes an excellent script and puts it in the hands of Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. The two are husband and wife. Cukor is a magician with his use of light and shadow to keep the theme of "Gaslight" strong. You won't want to miss a minute of the film. It is really one of the best films director George Cukor ever made.

Maybe we've seen it all before, but nobody does it better than Ingrid Bergman. Maybe we know how it'll end, but watching them get there is a delight! Filmed in gorgeous black and white. George Cukor is a genius.

Outstanding 1944 classic thriller. Great suspense (even though a bit predictable). The casting was perfect. Charles Boyer made me despise him as the nasty control freak husband Gregory, and Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman was absolutely extraordinary as poor Paula, his wife, on the verge of a nervous breakdown. (I didn't even realize until after the movie that 17 year old Angela Lansbury played the role of Nancy the trouble making chambermaid.) Terrific film. FIVE STARS.

Gregory Anton: "Paula, we shall have visitors - AND SHORTLY." Paula Alquist: "A doctor?" Gregory Anton: "Two. I believe the required number is TWO."
