Cinematography and acting are well done, but as this is SUPPOSED to be Mansfield park, I must give it a failing rating. Should have been "very loosely based on Mansfield park, with apologies to Jane Austen". If you loved the book don't even touch this one, if you hated the book, you might like this.

I care not that this is not a respectable adaptation of the book--I'd not be likely to read the chickbook; I read very few books written by women; they tend to be nothing but chickbooks. This movie is a terrific period piece.

Jane Austen would pen tart words for this misdirected adaptation. The director adds her own dark interpretations to the story which detract from it radically. The book is better.

I can not rate it higher as it is not an accurate portrayal of the book....some added scenes were of questionable taste....but, the acting and story is still entertaining for a period drama.

A good movie on its own, with excellent cast. However, it is absolutely not Jane Austen' s Mansfield Park.

Could have been sweet, but the dark additional themes of slavery (and hints of incest?) do not fit well in the Austen canon.

Do not watch this movie if you loved, liked, or have ever even read the book. I realize that Fanny doesn't fit the model of a modern feisty heroine, and that a portrait of a quiet, mousy moralist might not be to everyone's taste. But if you don't like the main character of a book, why pretend that your movie is based on that book? I suspect Rozema is trying to coast on the current Austen-mania, which is unworthy of a filmmaker of her talent.

Not my favourite adaptation of Mansfield Park. It isn't my favourite Austen story, but the back cover made this seem like it would be funny and fresh, and appealing to young people audiences. It was excessively dark and serious, and I didn't like how the director (wow, a canadian too) included the slave colonies -- that aspect was given too much attention and focus. Even if that horrific stuff was going on during Austen's time, DO NOT ruin a film adaptation with it! It made it disturbing, wierd, and disappointing. I always like what Canadian filmmakers bring to movies, but Patricia Rozema (even with her good intentions) butchered it. No offence, but this isn't a documentary. See the 2008 version with Blake Ritson and Billie Piper. You can't go wrong with all that sunniness.

If you are a true Jane Austen fan, like myself, I would highly recommend NOT watching this movie. They severely mutilated Austen's story, to the point of being hardly recognizable. It was described as "sexy" but most of the sensuality was perverted, not sexy, especially as regards the uncle and Fanny's father. And far too much of the story was destroyed for me to appreciate this at all. Horrible adaptation. Run for the hills.

Too much sensuality, drags on in parts.
