Not as described in the one star review!

The political ramifications resulting from the actions in Armageddon’s Reef cause increasing tensions between alliances under the established theocracy. It is indeed very socio-political, but a very solid part of a serialized story.

The first book in this series was okay, but this one is just "Merlin" "inventing" one technological advance after another, in long and tedious detail. I'd much rather read real history and archaeology. The main plot, the alien enemy out in space from which this planet is supposed to be providing a hidden human base for the future, is hardly mentioned and feels abandoned. Presumably Weber will return to it in later books, but I found this one just spent too long showing off all the research he had done, without telling much story beyond a few conventional sea battles and marriage alliances.

Second in the series. A good read. More geopolitical than science fiction but very entertaining
