This is one of those books that, like Alice in Wonderland, has many levels of interest in it. Kids get one level; adults can enjoy with the kids and see more wisdom for themselves. Tony Shalhoub does a great job. I hope the library will request more books he has narrated.
Both my 8 year old and I looked forward to car rides so that we could find out what happens next in the story. Well performed by Tony Shaloub and a sweet nice story. We need more like this available!
Classic children’s story – it is adorable and funny. This tale of a country cricket accidentally transported to New York City has a wonderful storyline with a sweet ending. All of the characters are engaging, both human and animal; the anthropomorphism is believable. It teaches valuable lessons on freedom (Chester prefers the freedom of the open matchbox to the fancy but locked cricket cage), accountability (Chester cricket returns to the newsstand after his friends accidentally set it on fire, and remains on scene after eating the $2.00 bill in his sleep – on both occasions to accept the responsibility for the damage), fame and identity (“what good is it to be famous if it only makes you unhappy?”)
