Considered to be one of Agatha Christie's most controversial mysteries, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd breaks all the rules of traditional mystery writing. A widow's suicide has stirred rumors of blackmail, and of a secret lover named Roger Ackroyd, who was found stabbed to death in his study. The case is so unconventional that not even crack detective Hercule Poirot has a clue as to how to solve it.

If you like cozy mysteries, golden age mysteries, or just a mystery period, this is a book you have to read. It deserves its reputation, and I bet like countless readers you'll reread a critical chapter to see how Christie fooled you. If you've seen some of the horrible televised versions, but never read it, you no doubt are puzzled by the high praise this book gets. But read it yourself and you'll see why.

Good gracious, I did NOT see that coming!! I read this one in one sitting, eager to find out who did it. Let me just say I was completely shocked. I will not include spoilers (because that's just mean) but I will say that you should not guess the culprit unless you are Hercule Poirot himself. I would say that this was one of my favorite Agatha Christie novels so far. Highly recommended!

I absolutely loved this one. I've read almost all of the Hercule Poirot stories and have never managed to guess the culprit right, this one least of all! An unconventional ending for her, but it was incredible!

This is one of Agathe Christie's most famous and controversial novels. What starts out as a typical Poirot mystery ends with an unexpected and depressing ending. The characters are some of Christie's best and Poirot is as brilliant as ever. Every mystery lover should read this book. Just don't think that you can figure out who the killer is.

This is my first Agatha Christie reads. Loved her work for the plain simple and to-the-point writing. This book in particular has a wonderful unexpected ending!

So far Agatha Christie has been delightful to read. This one I struggled through, perhaps I was distracted. But I'm glad I finished it. I never would have seen that ending coming. Who would've seen that coming? (I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't read it) This is a must read!

A wickedly clever twist/ending for a book written in the 1920s(?). Well-played, Agatha.

Christie is my favorite author and the Murder of Roger Ackroyd is my favorite book. Read carefully, if you feel like you know he did it, you're probably wrong.

As usual, Christie has a couple of tricks up her sleeve and goes to extraordinary lengths to fool her readers as to the outcome. The story starts a bit slowly but picks up the pace and gains complexity farther on. Quite far-fetched, but what who-done-it isn't! Poirot can of course be insufferable at times, but by telling the tale in a third person manner, Christie allows the story itself to sit front and centre while the annoying little detective is mercifully just one of the players.
An amusing diversion between sessions of reading weightier material.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is acknowledged as being one of the best mystery novels ever written, maybe even in the top ten list. I was impressed with Christie's writing and ability to keep my attention from being to end.
