(*Most memorable movie-quote screamed out in unison by a dozen warring boys*) - "Kill! Kill! Kill!"

(Filmed on a budget of just $250,000) - I would never say that this 1963 film-adaptation of William Golding's novel (of the same name) was great movie-making.....

But, if nothing else - Lord of the Flies certainly did make quite a powerful statement about how quickly innocent children (who are completely isolated from adults) will form their own government and, ultimately, turn to savagery and cold-blooded violence without a second thought.

Filmed entirely in Puerto Rico (but its story was set on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific) - Lord of the Flies (due to its unconventional subject matter) is particularly notable for the ultra-conservative era in film-making history in which it was made.

Competently directed by UK film-maker, Peter Brook - The performances of the 30 boys cast in the film were all, pretty much, improvised. None of these boys were professional actors..... (*Watch movie-trailer*)

A so-so movie based on the book.

Well worth a second look,.. especially with the 'bonus extras'. Peter Brook maintains that the path to artistic freedom and control for the Director is to have a low budget,.. and he made this masterpiece for $300K !

I've seen both, and the 90's version is the better.
If you were born in the last 30-40 years, you'll probably enjoy the colored/remake one much better.
This? Is falsely put as the newer one, it is in fact the 60's (which I already own), not the 90's one.:(

I'd only been familiar with the 1990 remake previously, completely unaware of this British '63 original. The film is low budget and VERY crude: camera-work; dubbed in audio (dialogue, singing, cheering, applause, etc); 'talent'. The kids were quite obviously mostly non-actors, having a blast just goofing around. Initially, they were somewhat wooden and stiff, but relaxed as the film progressed. But, despite the widespread amateurism, it deserves credit for being first. It translates William Golding's novel, however roughly, to the viewer. I guess they were a little low on cash. (lol)

drama-original black and white and very well done both filming and acting. the remake has nothing on this but color.

A very dark, chilling allegory about the true nature of humans.

I think the book is better.
