I almost turned this off because of the violence - but then I would have missed Presley's nuanced performance - his many layered search for affirmation and love.

This is a 2005 drama directed by Gavin Hood, based on the novel "Tsotsi".
Set in an Alexandra slum, in Johannesburg, South Africa, the film tells the story of Tsotsi---a young street thug who steals a car only to discover a baby in the back seat.
The superb performance of Presley Chweneyagae as Tsotsi carries this simple yet stunning tale of a shantytown redemption to perfection.
The film ends with Tsotsi raising his hands, and does not disclose what happens thereafter.
Two unused endings were shot for the film, which can be seen on the DVD.
You must see both endings.

Excellent, about a harsh hoodlum with the locale as South Africa, what makes it even scarier is that hoodlums portrayed there are much milder than some of the hoodlums in the USA. Still, this is a tough film about a group of struggling impoverished people leading a life of crime, and the mystery of what turned one of them into a criminal and his redemption, with a classic ending.

Excellent compared to 90% of the films out there people are watching. Which doesn't make it any good, but it's more watchable than most others.

Interesting perspective on South Africa/Johannesburg which I've never really been exposed to.

But the title character didn't really engage me; your mileage may vary.

Oscar Foreign Film Winner 2005 and deservedly so. The struggle with conflict is very present in this film; internal, external and lateral. Explores lateral violence, poverty, oppression and all the complexities. In spite of this, there are moments that portray humanity in very touching, moving ways. * Please note: I believe the film languages are Zulu and Africaans, not Creole.

Heart felt story. You will be touched by this. The subtitles do not really detract from this.

Great foreign film. I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. Well acted, violent, and at times touching, story of redemption. You end up rooting for the main character even though he is a horrible person. I was entertained throughout.
