Unfortunately the DVD skips and freezes at, what I assume, are fairly important parts of the movie. Great movie non the less.

Earth is a part of the Deepa Mehta film trilogy which also contains Fire and Water. This film follows the life of young Indians before Independence from Great Britain. Though our young protagonists are Muslims, Hindus, Parsees and Sikhs, their friendships will be destroyed with the partition of Pakistan from India. Many of the protagonists will be dead at film’s end, as over 1 million persons from the Indian continent would be slaughtered because they were the wrong religion without an opportunity to flee to safety. Until even today, Pakistanis and Indians are enemies, yet before partition, they were neighbors and had learned how to tolerate each other’s religious beliefs. I suspect that the young girl afflicted with polio is a symbol of Indian/Pakistan's affliction even to this day.

This is a very good Hindi movie. Has a bit of everything, very well written, good caste and good topic. The filming is strange though, the movie has the soap opera look to it. Worth the watch.

Looks very good, but this particular version I have is not working properly. Half way through it gets stuck. Hopefully the next DVD is in good shape.

This is the second of the Deepa Mehta "Elemental Trilogy" that I've seen (Water being the first). This was also a very good movie depicting how the partition of India affected characters who were Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Parsee. Romance, betrayal and teeny dash of history. The ending was moving.
