Absolutely masterful retelling of Shakespeare play. Spare, bleak, but wonderfully acted with brilliant lean score by Shostakovich.

Very engrossing. Wonderful cinematography and spot-on casting/acting.

This is the immortal version of Lear with Orson Welles. Nobody performed Shakespeare as memorably as Welles, in my view.

Its basically created by the Soviet All-Star team of the arts. Its my favorite Lear -- even counting Kurosawa's Ran.
