Great book to read. You feel the depths of sadness Eliza feels when something tragic falls on her family and when she misses her brothers, you feel it. It was well-written and very heavy with emotion: both good and bad feelings and it really helps you grasp what it felt being on the Home front during WWI.

I do enjoy a good piece of historical fiction. This one is no exception. Eliza Bates tells her tale of war, from Canada. She tells of her brothers abroad, her fears, and her nightmares. A bit annoying in the beginning, Eliza is a character that will grow on you, as you become attached to her, and her family. She refers to you as "Dear Reader", as she adores Jane Eyre, reminiscent of Charlotte Brontë. Jean Little tells Eliza's tale in a fashion that transports you back to her time. You can feel the fear as the postman approaches, with the looming possibility of awful news about her family. A tale of love, and fear that will keep you entertained until the last page of the story has been turned.
