How does that quote go? "All the world's a stage, and the men and women merely..." If you thought "stand-ins," it might be time to bone up on your Shakespeare. Every 20 years or so, the world rediscovers Shakespeare and the magic of his words. Author and illustrator Michael Bender has come up with a wonderful way to interest your children (perhaps even yourself?) in the bard with this pop-up book on Shakespeare's life and the site of many of his theatrical presentations, the Globe Theatre. Bender takes you from Shakespeare's childhood, through what is called his "lost years," through his life at the Globe, to his death in 1616 at the age of 52. As an added feature, Bender has peppered the text with highlighted words to be looked up in the book's glossary. A "cheat-sheet" chronological history of Shakespeare's life has also been included, so the salient points won't be missed. A terrific introduction for a child or an adult to the life and times of the most influential writer the world has ever known.
