I read eighteen of Ellis Peters "Cadfael Chronicles" books and enjoyed each one of them enormously. This one was an exception. Peters seems to have lost her touch with words. That lovely way she bestowed upon each sentence, that made them emulate the time-frame of the stories, is almost completely gone. The story also is too loose and long, most characters are quite predictable, as well as the story's closing. It gets so boring at times that I just skipped entire paragraphs--and missed nothing of the continuation of the story it seems! These little missteps first caught my eye when she mentions how lovely the spring was so far, just to, a few pages later, laud summer... And why Brother Cadfael is in the story, is anyone's guess, since he has no weight in the plot. I am hoping that with The Holy Thief she would have recovered her impeccable style.
